When it is been gotten used to the action, to carry out tangible activities and to live with the consequences of the decisions of other people, without having full conscience of that, as it is the case of many micro companies, before a public small and medium that fight all the days for surviving in front of a changing world and with the rules of the game not very clear, it is very easy to fall in the catch of believing that for them understanding is more difficult the holistic part of the corporate social responsibility.

Some months ago I had the experience of being before a group of enterprising people and although I have the conscience that every public is different and it is clear that with an introductory course is not easy summarizing what means to be socially responsible, the uncertainty of knowing whether really those who we gave it we were giving ourselves appeared.

To assure that the goals were complied with when concluding the day wondered it to the assistance what had seemed it the activity and that if it could offer its opinion -the habit is not a good friend- because sometimes we expect to listen to the same answers as "it liked" me, "congratulations","they do more activities as these" or simply one "gracias" full of a lot of feeling. But when an assistant that was little participative during the day suddenly says the meaning of the corporate social responsibility with its own words, and puts in evidence its cosmovision of the life and summarizes the activity saying "that it lives the love" you feel as that every person that was there opened not alone its mind, but its soul, is as opening a door that you know there is, but you usually use only in the places and special moments.

The spirituality in the businesses seems that in times of socket crisis it forces more. It is tied up with the concepts of ethics and values, breaking the old paradigm in the traditional way of doing businesses, taking a new gyration in this century that for many years divorced man of the companies was.

In developed countries subjects as the spirituality and the ethics took bigger relevance as a result of corporate scandals come about in the United States, such as Enron, WorldCom, Adelphia Communications and Tyco, that showed the lack of ethical and spiritual beginnings dragging big organizations up to the closing.

When it is observed to the managements as the ones that formed part of Enron, Wordcom, Tyco International and Imclone that are greedy and financial manipulations are delivered, lie and press in group to trick to the rest, ethical meaning would conclude that the American corporations do not have. (Coulter 2005: 110)
There are several reasons for the increase of the interest in the spirituality according to Robin, (2004:543):

? As counterweight at the pressures and of the tension of a rhythm shaken of life. The current life style, with uniparentales families, geographical mobility, temporary character of the work, new technologies that distances to the people, underlines the lack of a meaning of community that many people miss and increases the need to take part and to congregate.
? Those who form the generation of baby boomers, when arriving at a medium age look for something in its life.
? The established religions do not work for many people, who search asidores that replaces its mistake and palien its sensations more and more intense of emptiness.
? The demands of the work do that the work center dominate the life of many people, who with everything keep being questioned on the meaning of its work.
? There is a desire to integrate the values of the private life with those of the professional life.

Only the people can provoke a change in the corporate conscience. All what the system knows is as surviving. He does not know as curing, and it is known that the only way of saving patients is with an immersion in conscience and values. The truth and the value are born in the human heart, of down up. (Aburdene 2006:96)
With a real understanding on the spirituality at work, it can be avoided lost economic for the company, for example the theft produced by the staff implicates costly systems of safety internal, which can endure abundant leaks for the organization.

The concept of spirituality in work so that it is effective must differ from the religion, because the purpose is to search that the people can develop materially as well as spiritually, without putting in reduction its personal beliefs, rather to reinforce those beginnings that are compatible with the work competitiveness. For example, the honesty, the loyalty, the respect for the fellow man and for every cual.
The companies that are in this movement look for strengthening its leadership and prestige, characteristics that require the world of the modern businesses, where the positive image is synonymous with success.

Knowing how to handle this concept from the perspective of the with regard to the religious beliefs it can be converted in a tool of support to the work climate.
And as final conclusion we mean "that it lives the love".

Centroamérica has Regional Indicators of Business Social Responsibility

Within the framework of the V Central American Conference of Business Social Responsibility, TO BE CONVERTED, celebrated in San Jose of Costa Rica, at the end of the 2008, organized by the Business Association for the Development, the new regional instrument of measurement of RSC that it takes for name TO BE INDICATED was introduced.

This instrument is the result of the effort of all the organizations of Centroamérica dedicated themselves to promoting the RSE: CentraRSE, of Guatemala, FundeMAS, of El Salvador, unirse, of Nicaragua, AED, of Costa Rica and FUNDAHRSE, of Honduras.

By this instrument processes is based mainly in a simple questionnaire of answers closed, where the companies can measure its policies, and responsible every year.

The project of regionalization of the RSC in Central America, y axis has had with the active participation of the presidencies of the developer organizations of RSC of the region, who granted the importance of standardizing the concept, questions of the System of Indicators of RSC for the region.

The Regional Indicators of RSC have defined seven thematic axes:

1. Governability
2. Internal Public
3. Communities
4. Environment
5. Marketing
6. Public policy
7. Suppliers

The indicators for the measurement of the RSE in Central America evaluate the existence of the policies and of the practices to what is internal of the company.

The value added of this instrument is that it unifies concepts, visions and trends in the way of doing businesses in the Central American region, positioning it as a big member for the responsible and sustainable inversion. It keeps reading > > >

Will we need two planets in 2050?

By only reading this bond we know that writing in an ironic way, which it is impossible to have two planets, is although indeed we could need it according to the scientific class. What is true is that of continuing with the current schemas of production and consumable the sustentabilidad of the life in the planet is in risk to disappear.

The global heating is a subject of supreme importance, it could seem even dramatic to say that it is of life or death, but it is. It seemed that only the scientific and academic class takes it seriously, without leaving outside a reduced percentage of consumers people and responsible companies. Paradoxically, the efforts of those who more contribute to this situation, the most industrialized and rich countries, are not offering specific actions, fast and effective, to the point that this subject has been politicized and even we could affirm that it has been bureaucratized, walking to the rhythm of the apathy.

The class expert in sustainable development, as it is the case of the Centers of Production Más Limpia at world level is being urgent to the business sector and to the governments so that they carry out projects of reduction of broadcasts Más Limpia, who looks for minimizing the consumption of fossil energies and maximizing that of renewable energies, using the method of Production. They recommend to the electrical sector that evolves of a model hidro-thermal to one highly renewable. The thermal sector must evolve with use of biomass for productive uses and extend the range of clean technologies. From the esoteric point of view, this would be as the fifth dimension: pure energy and full wisdom.

A positive and encouraging point is that every time those who consume Europeans in the United States and United Kingdom, as well as in other countries are demanding products that minimize the damages to the atmosphere. For example, the state of California, which it is the only one in the United States that it stuck to the Protocol of Kioto, stimulates the use of hybrid vehicles and the Japanese manufacturers especially (Toyota) have found an excellent market niche. With this we can prove that the business social responsibility is a good deal. Middle class people in these countries have access to buy less polluting products, which in the face of this energetic and financial world crisis is an option for those who consume. Although the inversion as it buys hybrid vehicles is bigger, a better yield of these is translated by the profit. A person that consumes responsibly, that sometimes is also named it "green" (environmental) does the difference to decrease the irreversible damages to the atmosphere.

Definitely, a second planet, is an illusion, this the only one that we have and it is our responsibility to take care of it, although influential minds as Stephen Hawking state that only colonizing other planets, the human survival will be able to be guaranteed. Even if it seems science fiction if this happened, with the present way to act and to think, not will have sufficient planets in the universe that the dashing of the waves of the human breed withstands, we would be as the termite or the piranhas that destroy instinctively all what is to its crossing. Journalists in the policy: Ethical?

For Mirna Isabel Rivera. The desire from the journalism of incursionar in the policy and to aspire to a charge of popular choice is very questionable, but why the same with the medical class or engineer, the legal profession or any other profession does not happen.

In the case of Honduras, there is not any legal obstacle so that somebody who dedicates himself to the social communication carries out both activities. There are cases of journalists that are appeared in the pre-candidacy to presidency of the republic, representatives and representatives, town councils; there is who already escape in these charges and carry out both functions.

Few people take the decision of stopping exerting this noble profession to fight because they reach the dream of governing this country. The public opinion was surprised when listening publicly to the renunciation of a recognized journalist, main criticism of the current government, Rosana Guevara, who decided to accept the precandidacy to be converted in Vice-President of Honduras for the current of a political party, National Match, that in a historical way has been the main opponent of the ruling match, Liberal Party.

The human being is full of aspirations, ideals and ideologies, dreams, desires that can hardly be detached when they are very deep-rooted, this includes also journalists, who have political militancy, which does not rise from one day to the next, this is hatched with time. In that point it is when the transparency of those who do communication is questioned, when we look backward, in the time to which we listen, saw, read person determined and perhaps thought that it complied with what the academy shows us: the impartiality and the objectivity, not to lose the credibility in the face of the public opinion.

The unrest rises of which if really these informative spaces were or they are cut across by the personal interest. If the media must be more careful with its codes of ethics, (if it is that they count on one) to avoid suspicions and to guarantee that the information is not converted in a merchandise or it lends itself to political games.

Being part of the policy in Honduras as well as in other countries of Latin America, it is synonymous with corruption, which puts in great risk to the democratic system, that with its imperfections it is better than the authoritarianism or the coup governments, which take the power for the force. The democracy so that demand for honest leaders is sustainable that incursionen and look for directing in tries of the common good, eliminating the elites or groups of power that control to satisfy its mean interests and like this to guarantee the future of its descendants, running over the one who is that it is not in its circles.

The journalism and the means of information must assure the informative balance through the presentation of the two faces of the news, this a law that has the audience, is what allows returning to the roots of the honest and worthy journalism.

Of which if it is ethical that those who do journalism in the exercise of its profession use the media to achieve its own interests to the detriment of the common welfare, the answer is one clear not. That if it is legitimate to aspire to a popular charge to stop being informants and to become stockbrokers to favor to the excluded majorities, a solid is if. That if it is difficult to fight with the clashes of interests and to go out victorious, or better this that the white willow public with true information, is a great challenge. The Central American Net of RSC is brought together in Honduras

For Mirna Isabel Rivera. Presidents of the Central American Net of Business Social Responsibility carried out a meeting in order to orientate common policies in the region. With that they intend to standardize indicators of RSC, procedures, trainings, strategies and systems of communication among the companies socially responsible for the area.

Luis Javier Castro, Alicia Fournier, Executive Director, Rich AED-Coast, Jacobo Kattán, President, José Roberto Leiva, FundahRSE-Honduras Executive Director, took part in this meeting; Carlos Reynaldo Lacayo, Matthias Dietrich, UniRSE-Nicaragua Executive Director; Teresa de Alfaro, IntegraRSE-Panama Executive Director; July Blacksmith, Board of Management Director, Guillermo Monroy, CentraRSE-Guatemala Executive Director. This net includes also FUNDEMAS of El Salvador, which was not present on this occasion, but which takes part in this initiative actively.

The Central American Net of RSC agglutinates approximately 400 companies, it is expected more companies to follow this path. This association has in its agenda projects of interest among which the project of chaining of the big companies with the PYMEs appears, is sponsored with backgrounds of the Inter-American Bank of Inter-American of Development BID. Another regional project of supreme interest is the one developed by the Social Business Responsibility of the United States, which points towards the strengthening of the big companies in the frame of the Treaty of Free Trade (TLC). Another activity of supreme interest is the training that was offered to the media in the subject of business social responsibility.

Board of chessFor Mirna Isabel Rivera. The corporate social responsibility, is still a subject that is not understood in all its dimension, especially in those countries with emergent economics, where he still confuses with the charity or a way of building corporate image based on fallacies.

When a company always gives its first crossings in the subject of the corporate social responsibility the question rises up: Because where does start?

Many do it to the to develop programs or projects of social responsibility, as a little complementary to the existing business strategy, can be the beginning to assimilate this new vision of businesses, however, this is superficial if it is not in the strategy of the business.

There is not a unique formula that indicates the route that the companies must follow, but there is guidelines that must be considered if we want to insert the RSC in a sustainable and strategic way to us.

There are three dimensions that are keys and that must be taken considering the to develop a business strategy founded on the social responsibility: economic, social and environmental aspect.

In the world of the businesses we find companies that already inserted the RSC as part of its business strategy and they have measured the reached impact.

The strategic plans of these companies contemplate in its goals macros the related to the quality of life in the company, the environmental impact, its relations with his environment through multiple public of interest (communities, ONG ´ sec, churches, among others), thus as the importance of carrying out a responsible marketing, who pushes to the clients and the proveeduría to be guided also following the RSC and even the relations with the State.

All the previous must be basis in the ethics and the transparency, offered to the companies the credibility that look for having before those who consume to the moment of it being publicized, to carry out campaigns of public relations or any other commercial activity.

The RSC is transversal in the organization, and limiting the RSC to a goal but of the business strategy limits it and it converts it into synonym of many actions, impossible to comply in a single goal.
The RSC must be the one that covers the business strategy, as the final goal of this.

First Ethical Guide of the Business Sector of Honduras

The guide is a simple document to which she tells to following the beginnings of sincerity, honesty and solidarity, the same ones that regulate the interpersonal relations, in order to transform the small, medium and big company.

The guide holds that the concept of utilities and profits must be seen from a wide spectrum that includes the work satisfaction, support to the community, respect to the laws and, in general, an ethics that derive from the good relations and the good will.

The business social responsibility and the ethics, must not be separated, but to be seen of transversal way, striking in all the aspects of the organization, the social one, environmental and the economic one.

FUNDAHRSE delivers Sello Empresa Socialmente Responsable

For Mirna Isabel Rivera. The Honduran Foundation of Business Social Responsibility, Fundahrse, delivered a recognition to the socially responsible companies (ESR) for the first time. This will be granted to important companies of the nation in an annual way.

To manage to obtain it the companies had to attend to trainings, take part in projects actively and prove its appointment to have plans of continuous improvement.

This process is completely voluntary. The companies are the responsible ones of implementing the indicators of RSE and introducing that and as they are proceeding.
In 2007 seven companies were selected: Cargill Honduras, BATCA, Group Plycem, Corporation Flowers, BAC Credomatic, Group Kattán and financial Group Ficohsa.
FUNDAHRSE, took the experience of the Mexican Center for the Philanthropy (CEMEFI) as model, they come developing this activity since 8 years ago, on the part of that organization the Mexican expert Mercedes was invited Aragonese of Fernández, who talked during the award ceremony celebrated in 25 of October in the city of San Pedro Sula, Honduras. She talked on the importance that the companies identify themselves with the social responsibility.
The seal ESR, has a validity of two years and the companies will have to maintain these practices permanently for power conservarlo.Esta activity will be carried out annually in order to highlight the socially responsible companies that operate on in Honduras.

The Business Social Responsibility Only for the big ones?

For Mirna Isabel Rivera. Definitely, this is a question that seemed easy to solve with one not clear, however, when we approach to the reality and we move away from the philosophy we see that it is not as easy and strong as it seems.

The small and medium enterprise (PYME) are a big and different universe, at world level they are engines of economic development and Honduras is not the exception. Working since four years for an organization ago that promotes the business social responsibility, and where the big companies are the main developers of this initiative, we recognize that they have an economic solidity and a long-term vision. On the other hand, we perceive that it is a whole challenge to enter the world of the PYME the particularity of this sector, which represents 54% of the national PIB, but which confronts great challenges to every level and which fights for the survival in a world every time more globalized (fountain), given.

The PYME is urgent of bigger attention. The done simplex of looking for information that acts as referent on this sector to us is complicated. The studies and the databases are incomplete and insufficient in our country, there is a clear organizational weakness that proves the lack of cohesion of this sector. Organizations as the chambers of commerce and the business boards of the private sector are not really representative for them, on the other hand the government yet does not finish glimpsing a strategy that really strengthens them. A characteristic of this group is in the main that they are operated on by families and they are used for self-employing many Hondurans and Hondurans.

The business social responsibility, so that it manages to penetrate into the PYME sector requires the support of the government of a strategic effort on the part of the cooperative organisms, as well as of the organizations that lead this subject in the third sector and of course, since the broadcasting of this subject requires appointment from time, thought, effort, and of course of money.

Up to the moment some important actions have been carried out, for the case the Honduran Foundation of Business Social Responsibility, FUNDAHRSE, together with GTZ (German Technical Cooperation) SNV (Dutch Service of Cooperation) as a whole with some Chambers of Commerce (Choloma, Tegucigalpa and Polite) are approaching this subject. In the 2006 the Manual of RSE for PYME was thrown, now it is also been for publishing the indicators of RSE for PYME, but this alone is the beginning, so that it is sustainable it is necessary to have with a strategy with sustainable vision.

A form that spreading the RSE in the PYME could be very effective to manage is through the companies anchors or big, these could sue to its productive chain so that they adopt you practice socially responsible. This could mark the difference, big companies requiring and supporting to the PYME of its chain so that they incorporate the RSE, that a way that it is urgent to be explored to develop a system that persists and substantially sustainable.

In the 21st century by any company the luxury of being isolated can not be given, that would mean one lost of competitiveness and the imminent failure.

The RSE in Honduras: Why now?

For Mirna Isabel Rivera. The socially responsible subject of companies has taken bigger gives impulse in the 21st century and is considered as a world megatrend. Although there are sceptical people with regard to this matter, partially because of the lack of knowledge on it. However, Honduras is incursionando this route and the obliged question is: Why now?

The world scenario has changed drastically with the technological advances, the economic globalization, the treaties of free trade, the demands of respect to the human rights and work, the increase of the consumption, the global reheating, being converted in subjects that are in the agendas of most of the developed countries, including the economics emergent and as a shock wave has touched arrived to our country and provoking an arousal of the business sector, who looks for the competitiveness and the sustainability of the businesses.

Exhibition of that is that the subject of the Business Social Responsibility in Honduras has taken gives impulse from 2003, when the Honduran Foundation of Business Social Responsibility rises, (FUNDAHRSE) created by a sector of the Honduran employers worried for promoting and spreading this concept as a new vision of businesses that the system of management of the company must integrate strategically inside.

FUNDAHRSE in four years has managed to group together 47 companies of the private sector that they think in Honduras and contribute to the development of the nation. The members receive courses, factories, seminars, conferences and the tools to implement projects of RSE in its companies, among other profits.

Company Socialmente Responsable

Etymologically the responsibility word originates of the Latin verb respondere, that it means to answer and if we continue sounding the meaning of social, this is related with the society, whose area involves the people, the work, the beliefs, values, cultures, and the environmental environment.

When joining the concept of responsibility with what is social and the company, which is synonymous of profit, we achieve an innovative vision in the world of the businesses that involves to different sectors or public of interest, whose approach is towards the economic development, social and environmental that it means sustainable development.

Of the philanthropy to the RSE

The business social responsibility, is confused many times with the philanthropy or the social inversion, but once the companies understand it, realize that it must be initiated to what is internal of the company, improving the quality of life of its staff and strengthening the corporate government and externally it is necessary to be focused in the environmental impact that the company provokes, to commit itself to working with the communities and to carry out a responsible commercialization and marketing. The RSE is not to comply the law, is to surpass the law and them to carry out actions that surpass.

The main social responsibility of the company is ethical-economic and is own to the activity specific to the company, to its nature and reason of being: Causing wealth, growing and holding in the time. (FUNDAHRSE, Practical Manual of RSE 2007, pp. 9)

Innovation and RSE

The RSE allows having an attitude to the change but open, noting towards new paradigms, encourages a business culture based on ethical values, but focused towards the competitiveness and sustainability of the companies.

The companies that resist the changes and do not take the front for mistrust or lack of information undoubtedly have its permanence in the market assured but in the short deadline, the sustainability in the long deadline will be difficult to reach it. According to Peter Drucker, "there are not successful companies in deteriorated communities". Avoiding our environment and not confronting it can take us to the failure.

As Honduras nation, confronts the main challenge of reducing the poverty, to manage to eradicate this whip and to achieve a sustentable economic growth, it is necessary to encourage a relation between the company, the society and State.

Recently, the report "Doing Business 2008", of the World Bank, highlights Honduras as one of the "oldest reformers" of Latin America. The positive result is owed to an initiative public-deprived of the National Program of Competitiveness, these improvements, places Honduras as:
Better time in Central America to open a business, the second better time in Latin America to open a business, the fourth better time in Latin America to register an estate. More significant reduction, in the period 2005 to the 2006, in the time to obtain licenses to build and better time in Latin America to obtain licenses to build.

RSE now

The business social responsibility is a very important ally to achieve a more equitative society and benefits the competitiveness of the country that looks for being attractive for the national and foreign inversion. Because of that, the country represented by its government has the responsibility of continuing creating the favorable conditions so that the free enterprise is developed and is the economic engine that gives impulse to the sustainable development of the country.

In Honduras they are several the companies that are articulating strategically the RSE, although it is a path where it misses a lot for learning, the most important thing is to start now with the conviction that we are doing what is correct and that we will deliver a better world to the future generations of how we find it.

Innovation: A new paradigm to achieve the competitiveness

For Alessandra Ramos and Mirna Rivera. The modern companies confront new challenges, which push them to be more competitive and more innovative. The constant demands that they are submitted to on the part of his clients and competence, obliges to them to being more flexible in a more globalized market every time.

According to Chakravorti (2004:3) "in spite of the risks that entail developing and throwing innovations, the companies adore them because they give impulse the utilities, the growth and the value for the stockholders."

The organizations that are not open to this type of innovations or changes hardly will be able to be sustainable in the long deadline, because the lack of vision in this sense can turn into its worst enemy and leave them out of the business.

According to the Magazine of the Center of the International Trade (1999-2006) "To Innovate is the process of identification of not satisfied needs of conception of the services that will allow to attend them."

The added value that can be given to the products or services that offer determines the competitiveness of the companies to a large extent. The constant questioning about what he this offering, listening to the different public of interest, as they can be supplying companies, customers, stockholders and potential investors is as necessary as the product or service that he this offering.

According to
Pereira (2006):
Everything is modified when the contradiction appears. When a group of people is convinced that the earth and the man is not the center of the universe. It is because of that that we all avoid the changes. They take us out of the state of the rest in which we are. As all the bodies we avoid, we resist them.

Many companies at present do not want to bet to the changes and expect others to give the first crossing to be sure of which if it works. This form of acting preserving, although it guarantees them in the short deadline its permanence in the market does not give them the leadership, not even the credibility and image that is so necessary to be competitive. This it proved that the transformations and innovations break, sometimes violently, altering the current state of the things.

Nash in Chakravorti (2004:4) suggests that the markets resist the innovation because they want the balance, which validates its decisions and reinforces its compartment, when the innovation enters it generates uncertainty in the decision making. The innovation breaks the old paradigms and it breaks the statu quo, the markets are not in a complete way open because of that and in many the endurance weighs more than the profits that the change can bring do.

The developed countries spend every time more money in technological innovations. According to the National Institute of Statistics (2004:1) in Spain an increase is observed in the anus 2003 in relation to the 2002 of 1%, what indicates that the companies are convinced that the use of technology favors the earning capacity of the companies. The selfmotor branch is the sector that permanently carries out changes in its line of production to offer the customer a more attractive product.

The Business Social Responsibility in Honduras has taken gives impulse from 2003, when the Honduran Foundation of Business Social Responsibility rises up. FUNDAHRSE was created by Honduran employers worried for promoting and spreading this concept as a new vision from businesses that must integrate strategically inside the system of management of the company.

The RSE is not philanthropy, nor must be confused with social inversion, however, can be integrated strategically, in the parasol of the Business Social Responsibility.

From FUNDAHRSE, he provueven five thematic axes of the RSE, which are defined in the following way:

  1. The Ethics is basic to practice the business social responsibility, because of that it must be integrated in the Mission and Vision of the company.
  2. The Quality of Life in the company, must strike the employees positively. A company that practices the RSE, is converted in a magnet of talents, the loyalty of the employees is promoted.
  3. The Environmental Responsibility, consists in the companies being concientes and minimize the environmental impact provoked by its activities, through strategies of environmental management.
  4. Appointment with the Community, this orientated to the publish external or the community, the companies take conscience of the importance of contributing with the development of its environment.
  5. Commercialization and Responsible Marketing, puts emphasis in the chain of suppliers, as well as in the publicity and the responsible communication with the different stakeholders or interested public.

The RSE is a challenge for the modern companies, in Honduras, a country that fight for being attractive for the foreign inversion, is an added value, because of that it must not be seen as an expense, but as an inversion, which guarantees the sustainability of the company in the long deadline.
